Why I am writing this blog.....
Breastfeeding is important for every baby, every mother, every woman, family and the environment. I am a breastfeeding mother and long after those days are over, I will still be a supporter, educator and (l)activist. I also happen to be an African-American. Breastfeeding is even MORE important for the African-American family. This is a public health issue for all Americans, but especially for the African-American who by race alone is more likely to suffer from infant mortality, SIDS, obesity, diabetes, breast cancer....the list goes on. The good news is there is a no-cost, readily available preventative material that can be given at the birth of every African-American child. It is called human milk, and it is time to start inoculating our children with this lifesaving fluid. It is time to throw personal and cultural discomfort and taboo out and replace it with a real commitment to the physical and emotional health of the next generation.
